A&a Manuscript No. Uniied Schemes for Active Galaxies: a Clue from the Missing Fanaroo-riley Type I Quasar Population

چکیده
We link the lack of FR I type structure among quasars to the void of radio loud quasars below a critical disk luminosity of 10 46 erg/sec in the PG sample. We argue that the opening angle of the obscuring torus in radio loud quasars depends on the power of the central engine, approaching the jet's beaming angle near the FRI/FR II break. Consequently, low power radio quasars would either be classiied as radio galaxies (FR I) or strongly core-boosted (BL Lac) object, depending on the aspect angle, and no conspicuous transitional population would be expected for FR I sources. A closing torus with decreasing power would not only obscure the optical nucleus for most aspect angles but would also enhance the entrainment of the cool torus material into the jet stream, causing obscu-ration along the jet's periphery, as well as the jet's deceleration to form a FR I source. Above a critical luminosity, the wider torus allows for FR II type jets and visibility of the nuclear optical emission, characteristic of radio loud quasars. Apparently, at the same engine power the torus opening in radio weak quasars and Seyferts is substantially wider than in radio loud quasars, probably because of different dynamics or feeding mechanisms in disk and elliptical galaxies. This provides a clue for the radio-loud/radio-quiet dichotomy of quasars if the the jet/torus interaction leads to injection of relativistic e via pp collisions. Strong jet/torus interaction may lead to a substantial injection of secondary pairs and collimation in radio loud quasars, while weak interaction in radio weak quasars leads neither to pair injection nor to good collimation.

متن کاملUnified Schemes for Radio-loud Agn: Recent Results
After briefly summarizing the main tenets of unified schemes of Active Galactic Nuclei, I review some recent results in the field of unification of radio-loud sources, both for the low-luminosity (BL Lacs and Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxies) and high-luminosity (radio quasars and FanaroffRiley type II radio galaxies) populations.
متن کاملSpitzer Reveals Hidden Quasar Nuclei in Some Powerful FR II Radio Galaxies
We present a Spitzer mid-infrared survey of 42 Fanaroff-Riley class II radio galaxies and quasars from the 3CRR catalog at redshift z < 1. All of the quasars and 45±12% of the narrow-line radio galaxies have a mid-IR luminosity of νLν(15μm) > 8 × 10 43 erg s, indicating strong thermal emission from hot dust in the active galactic nucleus. Our results demonstrate the power of Spitzer to unveil d...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

To constrain models of the jet–disc connection, we explore Eddington ratios reported in Foschini (2011) and interpret them in relation to the values in Sikora et al. across the active galactic nuclei population from radio loud quasars, their flat spectrum radio quasar subclass, the recently discovered gamma-ray loud narrow-line type 1 Seyfert galaxies, Fanaroff–Riley type I (FR I) radio galaxie...
